Dan Webre

From The Martial Arts Encyclopedia

Executive Summary

Dan Webre claims he can teach "Filthy Jailhouse Fighting Secrets" on the basis of his rough lifestyle and time spent in prison. Contrary to his claims of a violent background, Bullshido.com found that Webre’s criminal conviction was for perjury, his background was in mortgage originating rather then security work, and he was released from prison early for his good conduct behind bars. Further, though Webre claims he committed a "justifiable homicide" behind bars, he spent the vast majority of his time in a correctional institution that had no murders during his incarceration.

Introduction

The commercialized world of Reality Based Self Defense (RBSD) tempts consumers with promises of developing lethal abilities with little effort. Or as one pitch reads, "Our instructional video packages will teach you these easy-to-learn skills in a matter of hours and give you the total confidence you need to walk the streets without fear . . . And best of all, you never have to be in-shape, strong or even coordinated!"1

The gimmicks to draw people in do change. At one time, it was super-secret military fighting methods, usually connected to an elite Special Forces unit (See Jerry Peterson's “SCARS for SEALS”). At another time, consumers could learn martial arts previously lost throughout the centuries (Chris Clugston, and “Roman Gladiator Fighting”). A final pitch worth mentioning is that the most brutal, effective techniques for winning a fight weren’t found in a dojo or a military barracks, but behind bars. This gimmick claims that one learned or refined "the deadly" in prison. The most well known "instructor" who is hawking such a product is Daniel A. Webre, better known as "Dan Webre."

Webre is best known for making a one-hour feature called "Filthy Jailhouse Fighting Secrets." This two-video course, copyrighted in 2001, is available through a company called TRS, which stands for "Threat Response Solutions." TRS ([1]) is the industry leader in producing and marketing RBSD tapes, using shameless, hyperbolic rhetoric to shill such products. But two big questions arise:

  1. Does Dan Webre tell the truth about his qualifications to teach self protection skills?

  2. Does the hour of material on his tapes justify the $69 dollars that TRS will charge you?

The short answer to both questions is NO.

This article will primarily address the first question regarding Mr. Webre's claims regarding his background. You're also invited to read the companion article containing five reviews to decide whether his tapes are worth buying (the $69 question). Hopefully I will not disappoint you, dear reader, by saying in advance that Hercules shoveled less bullshit out of the Augean Stables than is present in these videos.

Dan's Background and Employment History

Daniel A. Webre was born in New Orleans on December 10, 1970 to Daniel S. Webre and Elba D. Webre 2. His family home is located at 3952 Uri Street, Metaire Louisiana 70002. Since his birth, he has apparently used this location as his permanent address, regardless of whether he has lived at this location. There has been some confusion on this issue simply because Webre has frequently avoided service of process at this location; in other words, when the courts came calling for Dan, Dan was nowhere to be found.3

Dan Webre makes claims of earning money through being a bouncer, bodyguard, and owning business interests in the French Quarter. The truth is far less dramatic. For about 7 years between 1996-2003, Webre made his living as a mortgage originator. Mr. Jack Taylor, President of the Harvard Lending Group, Inc. (a company for whom Webre worked with between Mid September 2001 until January 17, 2002) told Samuel Browning that Webre "had mentioned that he had previously worked as a debt collector. Also, he previously worked as a loan officer for 4 other companies: Ameriquest Mortgage Co., Premier Lending (James Talbert-Owner), Mortgage Express (Mark Spandenburg-Owner) and Full Spectrum Lending."4

In addition to working for various companies,5 Dan Webre also spent time creating and/or working under his own initiative. Bullshido members found corporate records indicating that Dan was a registered agent and Co-director with Jay Andonie of the Harmony Financial Group Inc. in Metairie, Louisiana. This corporation was incorporated on February 2, 1996 and dissolved on January 4, 1999. ([2]) When one of our volunteers went to the Louisiana Secretary of State's office, they found that Article Three of the Articles of Organization read as follows: "Statement of Purpose: The purpose for which this L.L.C. is organized are: to qualify and lend monies to individuals that intend to purchase residential real estate and any and all other lawful purposes under the laws of the State of Louisiana."

Similarly, we discovered that Dan was a co-director and registered agent with Rick Canamar of Canamar and Webre Enterprises Inc, of Kenner, Louisiana, a venture that was incorporated on June 21, 2002 and which by 2004 was not in good standing for failure to file a current annual report. (Go to [3] to examine the abbreviated computer versions of these records.)

Based on these facts and records, Dan's main profession from 1996 onward was mortgage origination with several companies, as well as managing his own incorporated entities.

There is nothing dishonorable about Dan originating mortgages for a living. However, such information conflicts with his claims of a seedy and dangerous lifestyle revolving around being a bouncer at strip joints and brokering adult content. It is noteworthy that the best information that we could locate shows that he is not hobnobbing with the Russian Mafia, but with Mr. and Mrs. Jones trying to buy a home. Webre’s prosaic past wouldn’t be any cause for concern if he did not allege that his past qualified him to teach “Filthy Jailhouse Fighting Secrets.”

The most recent information we were able to track down concerning Mr. Webre's employment related activities was confirming that Dan has taken an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) course. On 8-12-2005 Samuel Browning called the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.6 According to an employee named Ryan, Webre completed an EMT-B course (standing for EMT Basic) at Nunez Community College on December 17, 2004. However, for some reason, as of August 2005, Webre was not then licensed as an EMT at any level in Louisiana.

A humorous note: While originating mortgages for the Harvard Lending Group Webre did make an interesting impression on Jack Taylor that is relevant to our inquiry. Taylor writes that Webre, "claimed to have a background in martial arts; this became somewhat of an inside office joke because it was quite obvious that this was nothing more than a fantasy of his. ‘Taking someone out’ (as he put it) with a precise blow from an index finger, is just not very believable."4

Dan's Security Work (or Lack of Such)

When Samuel Browning talked to Jeff Hurm, Dan's former probation officer on April 20, 2005, he told Sam that he had supervised Webre during his time on probation from December 2000 until December 2003. During these 3 years, he was unaware of Dan doing any security work or bouncing, though he did hear of Webre’s tape from TRS. Of course, Dan could have just lied to his P.O., but this is unlikely considering that Dan had told Jeff that he had filmed his “Filthy Jailhouse Fighting Secrets tapes.

Similarly, when Bullshido member Andy V. called the Security Board in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on May 13, 2005, he was told that the state of Louisiana requires a “Louisiana Public Security/Security License” for all uniformed security guards and professional security people in general. Individuals applying for this license are fingerprinted and run through a FBI background check. If they have no outstanding warrants, they are issued the license. Prospective employers have access to the contents of the background check, and many discriminate accordingly. But having a criminal record does not preclude someone from getting a license.

The office told Andy that they had no record of Dan ever applying for or receiving a public safety license. When Samuel Browning called the Security Board on August 8, 2005 they told him something slightly different: Their records went back three years and they had no listing for Mr. Webre.

Andy V. has pointed out that if Dan was working "under the table," perhaps as brief seasonal security help, the lack of licensing is irrelevant. However, if Dan has been doing regular security work for any length of time, a reputable establishment would have placed him on the payroll. This would make having the aforementioned license necessary. Following up a rumor, Samuel Browning did call “Larry Flynt's Hustler Club” in New Orleans to find out if Dan had done security work for them. He talked to Ann on May 5, 2006, and she verified that Dan had been employed by this establishment from February 11, 2004 to February 23, 2004. It was unclear whether this work was actually security-related. Finally after someone on another board questioned where he bounced, Dan claimed that when he does such activities he uses a false name. This is something we have never heard of professional doormen doing, and something that Webre neglected to do at the Hustler Club, so we think this in another one of Dan's "stories".

Based on the comments of Dan's former probation officer with the information provided by the security board, as well as our call to Larry Flynt's, we draw the following conclusions:

  1. From December 2000 to the present, there was evidence that Dan Webre might have done security-related work for two weeks at “Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club.”

  2. There is strong circumstantial evidence to suggest he never was the security professional he claims to be.

Remember, Dan has claimed he is both a fighting instructor and bodyguard:

I teach 8 private students and spend the rest of my time as a bodygaurd"

(This quote is in the fourth post up from the bottom of the page.)

To believe this claim you would have to discount the fact he did not inform his probation officer of such employment and, based on the available evidence, did not have the standard security licensing in this field. These make the above claim highly dubious.

Dan's Prison Record

On March 14, 2005, Bullshido obtained a printout of Dan Webre's prison record from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Since Dan had his court file sealed (United States v. Sealed, Docket Number 98:274 "A" United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana), we are dependent on this document for information concerning the offense which landed him in prison. According to the printout, (a copy of which is provided in an accompanying post), Dan was convicted of the D class felony of perjury arising from an incident that occurred on October 14, 1998. On June 23, 1999, he was sentenced to serve 18 months with a three year term of supervision. Dan was committed to custody on August 23, 1999. On or about August 23, 1999 he was assigned the Federal Medical Center Fort Worth.7

From the BOP printout, we find that Dan was at Fort Worth until he was furloughed on July 10, 2000. He then traveled unescorted to a "CCC" which probably stands for Community Custody. When Samuel Browning talked to a staff member at Bureau of Prisons, Community Corrections Office, at 701 Loyola Ave, New Orleans, LA 70113. they told him that Dan spent some time in a halfway house upon his release from prison. This arrangement would have allowed Dan to work for Premier Lending in October 2000, as has previously been mentioned. Contrary to what Dan has claimed elsewhere it does not look like he spent time in some of the "worst" (i.e. more then one) prisons in this country.8

The BOP record then indicates that Dan went home on home release between November 3, 2000 and December 13, 2000. On this second date, Dan received a good conduct release from home confinement and officially finished his prison sentence. Not counting halfway house time, he had served less then eleven months in prison or a penitentiary. Even if we have lost track of a couple weeks of hard time, Dan served less then a year in an actual prison. After his prison time, he returned to New Orleans and obtained a good conduct discharge months before his eighteen months would run out. This is important because if Dan had been brawling behind bars, he would have picked up some disciplinary tickets, and such tickets would have prevented him from obtaining a good conduct discharge.

To confirm our suspicions, Bullshido member Matt W. called Joe Savage, the Public Information Officer at the Federal Medical Center on March 21, 2005. Savage confirmed that Webre had been sent to his facility, which had a large general population in addition to its medical unit. He confirmed that Webre had been convicted of perjury and had spent most of his sentence at Fort Worth with some additional time at some transfer facilities. Savage couldn't share Webre's behavior log with us, but he did note that Webre was released early for good conduct and that Matt could infer from that that Webre was "not involved in much of anything", let alone countless prison brawls. When Samuel Browning later talked to Mr. Savage on May 31, 2006, this PIO confirmed that no one had been killed in a fight inside his facility during the time Webre was imprisoned there.

So why is this important? Because Webre, presumably with TRS' cooperation, made up information concerning Dan's prison record and omitted mentioning that he was convicted of felony perjury (a crime that would make a consumer question the validity of Webre’s claims).

Remember, TRS claims: "Dan Webre . . . just spent years in a federal penitentiary on a major felony count. . . He had 'field tested' some very nasty fighting techniques while in jail. In fact, he used them every day...to save his life... to protect his pals...and to gain the respect necessary to survive. . . . he is a fighter who tested — and proved — his 'bag of tricks"' every day in the worst kind of cage there is."

Dan himself claims:

Fri May 21, 2004 12:44 am Post subject: Guess I cant fight............

I fucked it all up and got caught up in a friends case and stayed at luxury resorts such as a few medium / high joints and an administrative facility in Tx. Exposure to extreme violence that iI had never experienced at that level , nor the numerous murders, rapes and the like, as well as two serious edged weapons situations that did not end pretty for either ......Waste of time, I gained no knowledge from living like that 24/7. . . Ive proved my past before with third party documentation. It seems to be irrelavant anyway because none of that real world stuff matters. Including one justifiable homicide that doesnt count of carse because it was behind prison walls, (couldnt that be considered "cage fighting" ) Sorry grasping at straws here.

As far as the justifiable homicide, I am very far from proud of that, yet I was in prison getting a soda when a guy decided to shank me for my card
(its a vending card you put money on, and people steal and selll them)
I didnt try to do anything on a conscience level I just did it. It does not make you tough or a baddass. . . . Email Phil if you have any doubts about who I am. He knows.
Peace, Dan

Let's restate the facts:

  1. Webre spent less then a year in anything that could be considered a federal penitentiary.

  2. He could not have been fighting every day because the resulting disciplinary tickets would have made a good conduct release impossible.

  3. At the facility where he spent the vast majority of his time there were no homicides while he was there.

  4. The only way Webre could have spent seven years “in the system” is if he is including probation and parole time, since he did less then a year in actual prison as an adult.
  5. We challenge Webre to prove us wrong by providing the specific date and location of this 'justifiable homicide' and sign a release that would allow us to access the incident report for this event along with his general prison disciplinary record.

Webre then claims: "I spent including as a Juvenile over 7 years in the system. Yes some was off and on (like that makes it pleasant?) due to parole violations." http://tinylinks.net/7363 Jeff Hurm who supervised Webre's probation for 3 years, told Samuel Browning on April 20, 2005 that Webre had successfully completed his probation. Therefore, any parole violations would have to have been when he was a juvenile, and once again Webre's seven years in the system, includes precious little adult prison time. Alternately Webre has claimed that he did five years in the system at all levels. "I spent a total of 5 years. All levels." (See post #14 for this comment.) Unless Webre had committed some horrific juvenile crime, or crimes, given his adult record, there is no way this could be true.

On a lighter note, one can only imagine the reaction of Webre’s P.O. knowing that Dan made tapes about “Filthy Jailhouse Fighting Secrets” when in reality, he was convicted of a non-violent offense and released on good behavior.

Dan's Tapes

This series is copyrighted 2001, though Dan says it was actually filmed in 2002. On the Senshido Forum Webre tells people that he filmed this material three weeks before June 24, 2002. What he gains by such a misrepresentation is beyond us, but that's just Dan.

On August 8, 2005 Samuel Browning telephoned Kacie Spencer-Smith (an actress in the tape) at her mother's house in Napa, California. He started the conversation by informing her that he was writing for an online service and was looking into Mr. Webre's background. When he asked her what she knew of Mr. Webre's martial arts background she said that she did not know much about his martial art background but that Ed Lake, the other extra was much more knowledgeable concerning martial arts then Mr. Webre. She also thought that Mr. Lake was much more knowledgeable about pressure points then Dan, and that Dan was getting his ideas on this subject from Mr. Lake. Kacie also said that she did not know anything about Webre's prison background.

Kacie asked Browning what he thought of the tape, and he truthfully replied that he was not impressed by Mr. Webre, and thought he was a bullshit artist. She shared the following thoughts and information:

  1. The tape had been filmed in 2001. She had been hired by TRS and had traveled to New Orleans with her parents.

  2. Dan "was very good at bullshitting people" but his physical skills were well below black belt level. If he were ranked Kacie though he would have been a lower belt then herself based on his apparent (lack of) skills. (Kacie is a Black Belt in Kempo)

  3. His techniques were not smooth, and lacked control. Based on her prior martial arts experiences and her interactions with skilled black belts Kacie felt she knew more then Dan did and was shocked at what he didn't know.

  4. Dan talked incessantly and "is very good at talking" but when it came time to teach, Dan quickly ran out of material and the material that he did have was often substandard.

  5. Kacie actually argued with Dan concerning some of the knife defense techniques he was going to show which she found ridiculous. At various points during the filming, she ended up ignoring Webre and substituting in her own techniques. For example, all the self defense scenes outside including the one in which she threw her keys into Mr. Webre's face (which came as a surprise to Webre) were her ideas, and techniques, and choreographed by herself.

  6. Kacie observed the TRS people were rather disappointed in Mr. Webre and they ended up paying her extra because she ended up having to tell Dan what to do on occasion.

Dan's Training

What Dan Claims About His Own Training is Inconsistent.

On his own tapes in 2001 Dan claims: "I've been training in the martial arts over twenty years" and that the techniques he uses were "proven in some of the toughest karate schools in the world, the United States Penitentiaries."9

However when later being interviewed by the Martialist Magazine published in June, 2003 Dan answered the following question in the following manner:

Q: What is your martial arts background?

A: Wing Tsun. It was good, but very informal. I learned from a neighbor when I was younger. I taught myself the rest from older Wing Tsun books. My real "martial arts background" comes from the streets, though -- from real fights with real people.

Q: Some have said this is a "jailhouse fighting sytem," and the imagery on your TRS tape seems to play to that. This isn't true, is it?

A: I do not teach a jailhouse fighting system. There really isn't any such animal. Yes, I went to prison once, but not for long enough to bitch about.

Unfortunately for Dan's credibility, on his tapes he did claim to teach techniques derived from prison and that he had over 20 years of martial arts experience. Here he claims he is mostly self trained and studied Wing Tsun informally. A review of his tape however does not show any techniques that appear to be Wing Chun or Wing Tsun based as Dan spells it.

Conclusions

Contrary to his claims,

  • Dan has primarily made his living by originating mortgages and not by performing security work.
  • His own BOP record indicates his claims of lots of hand to hand combat behind bars is not true, and he did not kill a man where he did the vast majority of his time.
  • Finally, since he was convicted of perjury, his credibility concerning his own life history is non-existent.

Notes

  • 1 - Undated photocopied letter from Bob Pierce, President of TRS, shipped with my "Filthy Jailhouse Secrets" tapes which arrived in March of 2005.
  • 2 - Daniel A. Webre's voter registration printout from Jefferson Parish, Louisiana as to his date and location of birth.
  • 3 - Back in December, 1991 Dan obtained a Visa card on which he ran up an unpaid balance of $3,895.81 by June 7, 1994. First Deposit National Bank of New Hampshire then sued Dan in June of 1995 and after the Sheriff of Jefferson Parish failed to make service on him, First Deposit then made a motion for the appointment of a special process server. Apparently this server wasn't particularly "special" because Webre was never served in hand and the suit became dormant. See "First Deposit National Bank versus Daniel Anthony Webre", Suit Number 106384, Division A, First Parish Court, Parish of Jefferson, State of Louisiana.

Later in April, 2003 Dan was sued by another creditor Steward Finance Company for refusing to pay a lousy $413:00. from a promissory note he had signed in October, 2002. Though judgment entered against Webre, Steward Financing's lawyers never managed to locate Mr. Webre in order to compel him to pay this debt. Hey Dan, you might want to call Attorney Shoughrue at 504-486-1789, he's still looking for you to pay up. See "Steward Finance Company #35 v. Daniel A. Webre" No. 134491 B, First Parish Court, Parish of Jefferson, State of Louisiana and Conversation with Attorney Wilson F. Shoughue, Jr. 4-19-2005.

The previous year, 2002 however had been a special year for Dan because he got to actually sue someone instead of being sued himself. From mid September, 2001 until January 17, 2002 Dan claims that he worked full time as a loan originator for The Harvard Lending Group, Inc of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. What happened next is disputed. Harvard through its attorney offered $298.50 to settle the matter. Webre claimed that he had been screwed out of $6,270 in unpaid commissions and that Harvard also owed him $18,810 in penalties. It appears that Dan tripled the amount of his "unpaid" commissions to establish the amount of his penalties. Three years later this suit remained unresolved though on April 19, 2005 Harvard's attorney Charles N. Miller, Jr. (504-529-4641) told me that action had stalled in this case. See "Daniel A. Webre v. The Harvard Lending Group, Inc", No. 579-431, 24th Judicial District Court for the Parish of Jefferson, State of Louisiana.

Finally, court papers from Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana reveal that on March 21, 2003 Hibernia National Bank filed suit against Dan Webre because Dan had defaulted on a promissory note for $28,035.00. This loan had been used to obtain a black, four door, Model 528I 1997 BMW. Dan did surrender this vehicle on November 16, 2002 which was then sold at auction in December, 2002 for $13,300. Hibernia then sued Webre for the remaining $10,264.50 which was owed on the loan. The suit was returned unserved, and the plaintiff later filed for the action to be dismissed, during a phone conversation with a court clerk I learned that the case had indeed been dismissed.

So Dan either paid off this amount, or the Hibernia simply could not make service on him. I do not know which of the two happened. The case is "Hibernia National Bank v. Daniel A. Webre" No. 2003-001091, Division A, 21 Judicial District Court, Parish of Tangipahoa, State of Louisiana. Filed on March 21, 2003.

  • 5 - Phone calls to the above-mentioned James Talbert and Mark Spandenburg on August 8, 2005 by Samuel Browning revealed the following information:

Dan Webre had worked for Premier Lending for three to four months starting in October 2000. Talbert described Webre as having a lot of energy and potential but was hesitant when asked if he would hire Webre back if given the opportunity. Through this conversation and an earlier one with Julie of the same office on August 5, 2005, Browning learned that Webre had obtained his Mortgage Originator license while working for Premier. While working with Harvard, Jack Taylor indicated that Webre also held a mortgage loan originators license.

Mark Spandenburg indicated that Webre had worked for him for a couple months in 2003 before stating that he was moving to California. He indicated to Browning that he still trusted Dan even though Webre had worked for him a very short time.
