From The Martial Arts Encyclopedia

No-Gi fighting is a style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Submission Grappling that does not use a uniform or allow clothing grabs as opposed to gi. "No-Gi" may also refer to MMA competitions that do not allow fighters to wear a gi while competing.

Given the popularity of combat sports that do not allow a gi to be worn, some schools of grappling and similar disciplines have little or no instruction in fighting with the gi. In contrast, more traditional schools of BJJ, judo, and other arts claim that learning to fight in the gi is still relevant and carries over to fighting without it.
