The Ultimate Fighting Championship league is the largest and most popular MMA promotion in the United States.

Acquisition of PRIDE

In 2007, UFC owners Lorenzo and ______Ferrtita and president Dana White announced that they had purchased the Japanese MMA league PRIDE FC for about $52 million.

One of the primary benefits of this acquisition was the availability of PRIDE fighters to fight in the UFC. This included Mirko Cro-Cop, Wanderlei Silva, and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

The UFC claims that it will maintain PRIDE as a distinct league. However, some MMA fans express concern that PRIDE will adopt the same Unified Rules of MMA that the UFC currently follows. One of the major differences between the two leagues was the variety in allowed techniques. For instance, the UFC allows elbow strikes to downed opponents, but forbids the use of stomps or kicks to the head; whereas, PRIDE forbids the elbow strikes, but allows the latter stomps or kicks to be employed.
